To Troop 65 Parents and Scouts:

We have planned a very unique outing coming up and look forward to the participation of scouts and parents.

Family Day at Belk Scout camp is being offered to allow parents of scouts in Troop 65 to observe the patrol method in action.  Not only will you see how we are preparing for the upcoming Camporee event, parents will participate in putting on some of the event stations. In addition, parents will be treated to a meal prepared by the scouts of troop 65 and you will be special guests at our summer Court of Honor. To put on this event and still adhere to the principles and methods of the scouting program, we ask that parents in attendance function as observers only so the troop and patrols can function as they would on any other scouting event where parents are not in attendance. The expectation of the upcoming Camporee is for all troops to be led by the boy leaders. It is important that the scout leadership not be compromised and that our Senior Patrol Leader, Assistant Senior Patrol Leader, Quartermaster and Patrol Leaders are allowed to lead the troop with as little outside influence as possible. Thanks for being in attendance as we work to help our troop and its leaders “Be Prepared” for the upcoming Camporee. – Scoutmaster Hawkins

The plan for the September outing is to:
1.      Prepare for Camporee
2.      Parents and siblings are invited Saturday and encouraged to stay overnight if available
3.      Troop 65 Court of Honor
4.      Host a Gear Swap

·        We expect all Scouts to attend this important weekend. Sites 1-3 are reserved at Belk Scout Camp.
·        Parents (and siblings) are invited and encouraged to come Saturday for  the Dinner and Court of Honor…and camp overnight if available

1.      Camporee Prep
Background:  A Camporee is a troop vs. troop competition that highlights several key skills related to scouting.  It is a regional gathering of Scout Units that occurs once a year.  The Etowah District Camporee will be in October at Belk Scout Camp (10/21-23).  Troop 65 is preparing for the Camporee.  We will set up 6 “mock” Camporee Stations throughout the day to develop and refine key scouting skills as they rotate into each station for practice.  Stations include: Knot tying; First Aid; Fire building, Orienteering, Plant and animal identification and others.

NOTE:  We need Parent Volunteers for half and full day shifts at stations.

2.      Dinner
Parents (and siblings) are invited to eat with the Patrol.  Your son and his Patrol will be planning, shopping, preparing, cooking and cleaning Saturday nights’ meal. NOTE:  A timely RSVP is very important

3.      Court of Honor
Typically a BIG deal because it is a time to recognize all the work EACH Scout and the Troop has done over the last 6-7 months, including merit badges, rank advancement and trips…in front of the families.

NOTE:  If nothing else, try to make this event.

4.      Gear Swap
It’s in your shed, your attic, your garage!  Got extra gear or “gently-used” gear?  Have you either upgraded your gear or moved on to another Scout hobby?  Buy, Sell and Swap your tents; boots; sleeping bags; sleeping pads; stoves; backpacks; cooking gear; rain gear; outerwear; camp chairs; merit badge equipment; cordage; coolers; whatever you can bring.  Note: Label with last name and price.  Meet at designated area (TBD)

·        We would like parents to pitch a tent and camp at the next adjacent site on Saturday night

·        How much will it cost?

o   $16 per Scout (includes transportation and food) ($2-Bfast; $5-lunch; $5-dinner; $2 Bfast; $2 Gas )
o   $12 per Parent ($5-lunch, $5-dinner, $2-Breakfast)
o   $5 per Parent for Saturday dinner
o   $5 per additional sibling Saturday dinner

ACTION Requested:   Need to know from RSVP:

1)      Scout planning to attend
2)      Parents planning to assist with Camporee stations (half day or full day)
3)      Parents planning on dining
4)      Parents planning on attending Court of Honor
5)      Parents planning on camping

Please RSVP to Angie and specify your interest in:  Dining, Camping, Court of Honor…
·        Please email clizarazo@aol.com
