NEW RIVER TRAIL | GALAX, VA

NOVEMBER 14-16

Our November trip will be to the New River Trail State Park in Virginia for a fun cycling ride on the New River Trail, part of the Rails-to-Trail initiative across the country. The New River Trail travels more than 55 miles along the New River, the oldest river in North America, providing many scenic vistas, bridge crossings and tunnels through mountains. We won't be biking that entire distance, but will be taking a 12 mile section from Galax, VA to Fries Junction, VA.

For our campsite, we will be staying at Camp Raven knob and utilizing some of their Adirondack sites, much like we did on our climbing trip there in 2023.

As for bikes, we again are offering the opportunity for attendees to bring their own bikes if you choose as well as coordinating rentals for those who need it. Please see the links to the left to RSVP and packing list/preliminary itinerary.

NEW SERVICE OPPORTUNITY: YARD WORK FOR LOCAL FAMILY DEALING WITH TERMINAL ILLNESS

This past week, I was approached by members of Philadelphia Presbyterian Church with a unique request for assistance that will qualify for service hours for Scouts. The Burr family, who are lifelong members of Philadelphia Presbyterian Church, are in need of assistance in getting yard work completed each week.

A little over a year ago, Cory's and Kathryn's four-year old son, James was diagnosed with Batten's Disease. This is a rare genetic condition that causes cells to collect waste instead of getting rid of it. As a result, children who develop batten's disease experience seizures, vision loss and problems with thinking and movement. Symptoms get worse over time. Batten's disease leads to early death for children. Based on the type of Batten's with which James was diagnosed and his age when he was diagnosed, his life expectancy is 8 to 12 years.

The Burr's have James enrolled in experimental trials that require trips to Duke University and UNC Chapel Hill three weeks each month for cranial and ocular injections in hopes of slowing the progression of the disease. I've included a link to the family's website which updates their journey and provides more details about Batten's.

Here is the ask of our Scouts, leaders and parents: Currently, Cory is trying to maximize his time with his son, which means taking care of the yard after dark (sometimes after midnight) or not at all. We are looking to see who would be willing to help in a rotation to maintain the Burr's yard. If you are willing to help, please click the button below to email Mr. Hall.
